Amended plans drawn up for a traffic-calming scheme, including 20mph zones in Shipley , are being publicised.

Residents have until September 14 to object to the proposals, which are designed to stop speeding and rat-running in Nab Wood and Moorhead.

The original scheme was thrown out by the Shipley Area Committee in January following concerns from residents.

The plans were then reassessed following changes to legislation on 20mph zones, which allow for a reduced number of physical calming measures.

The changes include retaining the 30mph speed limit along Moorhead Lane, but installing raised junctions at the junctions with Avondale Road, Ashfield Road and an existing zebra crossing. The number of vertical calming features has been reduced from six to three.

In Nab Wood , the number of calming measures has been cut from 52 to 18, with speed limit warnings painted in the road and 20mph repeater signs proposed at sites originally earmarked for road humps or other vertical features.

Block-paving has been proposed at the Sherwood Grove, Highfield Terrace and Bromley Road junctions with Bingley Road to slow down crossing traffic and turning vehicles.

Bradford Council has already carried out consultation on the amended proposals, with a majority of people supporting the 20mph zones and traffic calming proposals. In addition, people have called for traffic calming in cul-de-sacs to be removed eventually.

Work is due to start this year on 20mph zones in Saltaire , Wycliffe and Hirst Wood, which were agreed by the committee earlier this year.

The two schemes are both part of a wider £3.3million project to improve traffic flow and safety at the notorious Saltaire roundabout, by turning it into a traffic light junction.

In a report to the area committee last month, Richard Bruce, principal engineer at the Council’s major highways unit, stated: “The traffic calming proposals have been developed as part of the Saltaire Roundabout Improvement project to address existing concerns about the speed and volume of unwanted through-traffic within the residential area.

“The proposals also provide a means of dissuading through-traffic from using residential areas both during and post-construction of the signal controlled junction at the existing Saltaire roundabout junction.”

Details of the draft traffic regulation orders are available to view at City Hall in Bradford and Shipley Town Hall. Any objections should be submitted by noon on Friday, September 14.

If there are objections, the issue will go back before the area committee again.
