High performance supercars and classic vehicles from more than a century ago were on display as the Bradford Classic returned to the city at the weekend.

Thousands of car enthusiasts flocked to Centenary Square on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the annual event.

It was one of two classic car shows held in the district over the weekend, as the Burley Classic Show also took place on Sunday as part of the summer festival.

While a wide range of cars, from Rolls Royces to MGs and even a converted Mini hearse, jostled for attention, glistening in the sun, the star of the Bradford Classic was arguably a Jaguar R3 Formula One car, as driven by Eddie Irvine in the 2002 season.

The magnificent-looking car, standing proudly on display in front of City Hall, was brought to the show by the Jaguar Heritage Trust, which also displayed a long-nosed 1956 Jaguar D-Type that finished sixth in Le Mans in that year.

Richard Mason, technician at the Jaguar Heritage Trust, said it was a joy to see the interest shown in the cars.

He said: “It’s a fantastic event – it’s a really nice, relaxed happy place.

“I think this is the fifth year we have been attending, although we have never brought the R3 down before.”

The oldest car on display was believed to be a 1910 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, brought to the show by Christopher Clapham, 53, of Shipley .

Mr Clapham said: “It’s nice that people can see and enjoy a car like this. It’s for everybody to enjoy – a great British achievement of engineering.”

Other cars on display included a restored yellow Ford Escort Mk2 RS2000, several MGs and a couple of Bradford’s own Jowett vans.
