A volunteer who can be found “at the heart of almost every community activity” in his neighbourhood has been nominated for a Community Stars award.
Peter Jackson , treasurer of St Martin’s Church, Heaton , and the Upper Heaton Working Together group, has been put forward for recognition in the Telegraph & Argus awards scheme by the Rev Clare MacLaren.
Mr Jackson takes part in community clean-ups, public meetings and, as well as holding the purse-strings, he is just as likely to be found putting up gazebos, moving furniture or litter-picking, she said.
In her nomination, the Rev MacLaren said: “Peter spends hours of his time dealing with the hundreds of local people who use St Martin’s community hall for parties, events and other activities, often coming out to lock up late at night, without complaint. He really is a star.”
She said he works “tirelessly” for the benefit of the community.
“He likes to make things happen, bringing the community together, making it more attractive with projects like bulb-planting, and better play and sports facilities,” she said. “He is always willing to help in practical ways, even if that means putting himself out.”
Mr Jackson, 71, said it was nice to be nominated.
He said: “If I’m part of an organisation I like to get involved with doing things.”
Nominations are still being sought in the Community Stars awards, which are run by the Telegraph & Argus in association with Bradford Council, and a form can be found in today's T&A.
We are inviting nominations in the categories of Community Champion, Good Neighbour, Volunteer, Fundraiser, Community Group, Young Active Citizen and Community Sport Maker, a new category which aims to recognise someone who devotes their time to increasing participation in physical activities among people aged 16 and over.
Nominations must be received by Saturday, September 8.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at City Hall on December 3, where they will be presented with a Bradford Medal.
