A gym at a Shipley mill complex was cordoned off with “biohazard” tape amid fears raw sewage may have flooded in following a deluge of rain.
Yorkshire Water was yesterday investigating possible sewage contamination at Victoria Mills, next to the River Aire in Salts Mill Road.
Owners of the converted former woollen mill put up black and yellow tape at the entrance to the gym and signs warning of a possible contamination risk following the flooding on Wednesday.
Louise Green, a Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “We carried out an investigation at the location because of the really heavy rain and flooding in the area. We found a blockage in the sewer which we cleared straight away.”
Andrew Mason, managing director of Newmason Properties, which owns Victoria Mills, confirmed the gym had been temporarily closed. “Mitigation measures are now under way,” he said.
Bradford Council’s principal drainage engineer Tony Poole added: “Work has been carried out to improve the situation and Bradford Council, the mill owner and Yorkshire Water are having discussions to find the best way to prevent it happening again.”
