Proposals to introduce more on-street parking charges on the edge of Bradford city centre have been shelved after consultation with local businesses and residents.

A major review of parking across the wider city centre was announced in 2010 with the area split into a number of zones. It was intended to identify areas where extra on-street parking could be provided, as well as extra loading and disabled bays.

It would also see the removal of limited free parking bays to be replaced with time-limited pay and display – for both short and longer periods.

Bradford Council said the revisions were necessary to help tailor on-street parking to better suit the needs of businesses and shoppers in the city, as well as improve road safety by preventing congestion caused by unrestricted parking.

The first phase of the review saw the number of pay-and-display parking bays increased by 200 new spaces in the city centre zone. Now initial proposals for the Wapping and Cathedral areas have been shelved following discussions with local businesses and residents. A new scheme is to be drawn up to improve traffic flow in the area.

The original scheme would have turned the vast majority of limited-waiting bays into both long-stay and short-stay pay and display.

A couple of small stretches of limited waiting would have remained, and there were also proposed coach parking bays, as well as loading bays and permit bays.

Council principal engineer Chris Bedford said: “As a result of discussions with local businesses, residents and other interested parties, proposals under the City Centre Parking Review to introduce pay-and-display parking bays in the Wapping and Cathedral area have been shelved.

“As part of the same review we are considering, at the request of local residents and businesses, introducing some formal parking arrangements to improve traffic flow in that area but no concrete proposals have been drawn up as yet.”

In addition, the Council is currently advertising plans to introduce “no waiting at any time” restrictions on Stott Hill and Jermyn Street near Bradford Cathedral.

Mr Bedford said: “Parking restrictions proposed for the Stott Hill and Jermyn Street area are the result of a request to ease congestion in that particular section and are separate from the parking review.

“No parking restrictions or other changes will be introduced by Bradford Council in any part of the review without full consultation between all interested parties.”
