Organisers of a summer festival are hoping they can contribute to the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games with a series of activities.

The fourth Burley -in-Wharfedale Summer Festival begins next week, with a raft of physical events on offer for all ages, which organisers hope people will be encouraged to do after watching the Olympics on television.

Among the activities planned for the festival, which starts on Saturday, August 18, are a climbing wall provided by Bradford Council’s play and activities development unit, yoga, street dance, zumba, guided walks and fishing.

Youngsters can achieve a Young Leader’s award around an Olympics theme in a course run by the Wharfedale Activity Group.

The walks will be led by local historian Dr Dennis Warwick and include a walk around Burley nature reserve and a more challenging moorland walk.

Organisers says they are also hoping to build on an Olympic legacy of community engagement and participation by getting as many people in the village involved as possible.

“The festival programme has been designed to offer the widest range of activities to appeal to as many interests and groups as possible,” a spokesman said.

“A big proportion of the events are offered from within the community and many are low cost or are free.

“Some, such as the classic vehicles show and the associated events on Sunday, August 19, attract very large numbers to the village, while others are on a smaller scale.

“The festival relies on the participation of a large number of volunteers to organise the week and see that events run smoothly.

“Many people comment on the pleasure of seeing so many people taking part in activities in the village during the week and on the general festival atmosphere.”
