A leading Bradford businessman is gearing up to take on the mammoth task of completing the National Three Peaks Challenge in 24 hours to raise money for a Bradford-based children’s charity.

Paul Mackie, vice-president of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce, and nine other businessmen will be attempting to conquer Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours in a bid to raise £10,000 for One in a Million.

Mr Mackie, chairman of Low Moor construction consultancy Rex Procter and Partners, said the money will go towards supporting the charity’s free school, which is set to open at Valley Parade in September.

He said: “It’s very tough – it’s not just the walking, but you have also got all the driving and the problems that you come across with that.”

Mr Mackie has completed the challenge five times before, three times in 24 hours.

“It’s a completely different challenge to the Yorkshire Three Peaks.”

Mr Mackie will be joined on the walk by Martin Sweeney, Chris Schofield and Jane Ruston, of Schofield Sweeney, Craig McHugh, of OIAM, Russ McGrath, of Tandem Marketing, Tony Burns, of Neva Consulting, Martin Ribchester, Phil Burgess and Luke Watson, of Willmott Dixon Construction, and Richard Waters, of Guide.

He said: “In my role as vice-president of the chamber of commerce, the chairman of the Education 4 Enterprise Board in Bradford and a board member of the Employment and Skills board, there has never been a more critical time for business to step forward and to help our young people find decent work to live decent lives.”

He added: “One in a Million provides weekly sports, arts, education and enterprise programmes to children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Bradford.
