A man remained in a serious but not life-threatening condition in hospital today after he was shot in a “targeted attack” in Bradford.

Detectives are appealing for information after the 31-year-old was shot in the leg as he walked to his car after visiting shops on Clayton Road, Lidget Green, at 5.20pm on Saturday.

The victim, who has not been named, was taken to hospital where was due to have surgery on Sunday. Police have launched a hunt for the gunman and Councillors urged witnesses or anyone who saw anything suspicious to come forward.

Coun Abdul Jabar (Lab, Great Horton) said: “It’s a shocking thing to happen and we send our best wishes to the man who was shot.

“People are concerned about what’s happened and the community needs to cooperate and give the police any information they have.”

Coun John Godward (Lab, Great Horton) added: “This person needs to be brought to justice.

“Anyone who carries a weapon on the streets is a danger to the community and needs to be apprehended.”

Police cordoned off Hollingwood Avenue as they examined the scene of the shooting, outside M&H newsagents, on Saturday night.

Neighbours, who described seeing the man lying on the ground with a bullet wound to his lower leg, said officers returned to the scene on Sunday morning to search nearby drains.

Detectives believe the gunman approached his victim from nearby Lowell Avenue and fled on foot in the same direction. Officers were seen searching gardens on the street at the weekend.

A police spokesman said they are treating the incident as a “targeted attack” and appealed to anyone in the area who saw anything suspicious to contact them.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101.
