A fire started in the kitchen of a basement flat after a chip pan was left unattended.
Bingley firefighters were called to the building in Charles Street, Bingley, at about 11.30pm yesterday.
A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said a man, believed to be in his late 30s, had started cooking the chips before leaving the flat to make a phone call from a nearby phone box.
The spokesman said when the man returned he discovered the fire.
He said: “Luckily the man was outside because he came back to discover his flat was on fire.”
The spokesman said the other occupants of the building, which had been converted into flats, were out on the crew’s arrival after being alerted to the fire by smoke alarms.
