Pudsey-based theatre group Fulneck Dramatic Society is continuing to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with an outdoor production of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives Of Windsor.
“It’s our deferential nod towards her majesty in this jubilee year,” said director David Robbins. “But that’s not the only reason we selected this Shakespearean romp. It’s also a lot of fun – the nearest the Bard got to writing a farce.”
Updated to 1952, the action takes place among the smart set at Windsor Golf Club. It will be performed outdoors with Fulneck Golf Course as a backdrop.
“The play transfers very nicely to the second Elizabethan era and features all the characters at a golf club,” says Dave.
“It centres around ace golf pro, Sir John Falstaff. He plays off a mean handicap, but the womanising, hard-drinking, bon viveur has hit a bit of a financial bunker. He needs money. And he needs it fast. Enter the merry wives of Windsor and Sir John espies a way of unlocking their coffers and replenishing his.” Golf club secretary Jamie Maclean adds: “The setting here is superb and if we’re lucky with the weather it promises to be a spectacular night out.”
Performances are on Monday, June 11, Tuesday, June 12, and Wednesday, June 13.
