Murder squad detectives were last night quizzing a suspect in connection with the killing of a 38-year-old man in Bradford.

The victim, who has not been named by police, died at Bradford Royal Infirmary early yesterday morning.

He had been found with what police described as “various injuries” when paramedics were called to a flat in Apsley Crescent in Manningham at about 5.30am on Monday.

Police were called in by the medical team and a detailed forensic examination of the terraced building and the surrounding area was continuing yesterday.

Officers in whites suits, masks and gloves were bringing out bags of rubbish and what looked like clothing, sifting through it in the front garden looking for evidence. A team was also working at the back of the property in a mechanics yard working their way through a pile of scrap.

A locksmith was called to the scene at about 12.30pm to force entry into one of the upstairs flats. He said the other four flats inside the property had all been open.

“I don’t know what’s happened but it’s been something horrific,” he said.

Through the upstairs window, forensic oficers could be seen searching the room with ultra-violet torchlight.

Neighbour Muhammed Alqasim said the house was often the scene of outbreaks of trouble and that police were regularly called to attend.

“There’s always shouting and fighting. We hear it all the time, especially at night so I’m not surprised this has happenend although it is awful someone has died – that’s sad,” said Mr Alqasim.

“The men who live there are all English but they drink a lot. I was talking to one of them the other day about alcohol and about the hardships it can bring, he agreed with me but two days later he was drunk again.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said there were a couple of men in their 30s living there, a couple of others in their 40s and one aged about 20.

“We don’t know much about what happened but I think the Cyrenians project has some involvement there,” he said.

Bradford Cyrenians, based in Manningham, is a non-profit making organisation that provides a direct access emergency hostel and a range of supported housing accommodation in partnership with Yorkshire Housing for single homeless men.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Housing said: “We have been made aware of the situation and are helping police with their inquiries.”

Detectives have confirmed the man’s death is being treated as murder and a 35-year man was being held for questioning. Witnesses or anyone else with information about the incident should contact Bradford South CID on 101.
