People across the district are being urged to get into the Olympic spirit as the 50-day countdown to London 2012 starts tomorrow.

With the Olympic torch relay passing through the district later this month, organisers of the Games have compiled a list of ways to celebrate in the final few weeks before they begin.

Olympics enthusiasts can sign up to be ‘local leaders’ and receive advice on hosting sports quizzes, parties and gardening events.

Schools are being urged to celebrate London 2012 World Sports Day on Monday, June 25, and plan Paralympic Games activities for the start of the new academic year in September.

There is also an official London 2012 mascot dance for pupils to learn and an Olympic-themed schools competition.

Bradford will welcome the Olympic Torch Relay to City Park on Sunday, June 24, when a celebration event incorporating arts, music and cultural activities will take place to mark the torch's arrival.

Sporting-themed celebration events will also be held in Lister Park, Ilkley and Keighley.

Sports and arts activities enjoyed by older people will be on display at a festival in City Park from Saturday, July 7, to Thursday, July 12.

High-energy street dance professionals, freestyle BMX riders and skate-boarders will take part in the Bradford Big Dance, part of a UK-wide celebration of dance, on Saturday, July 14.

The BBC Big Screen in City Park is also one of 12 official ‘live sites’ around the country which will broadcast live Olympics and Paralympics coverage.
