Bradford singer Gareth Gates planted the first tree yesterday in a new woodland in Roberts Park for children in care to highlight Foster Care Fortnight.

Mr Gates, whose parents are foster carers and have looked after around 50 children over the years, planted the first of 22 trees in the Looked After Children’s woodland, to mark the fact that nationally a child comes into care every 22 minutes.

He said: “My parents wanted to give other children the same sort of security and love that we had. Many of the kids who came into our family didn’t have a great start in life and I know my mum and dad made a huge difference.”

Bradford Council’s fostering service is continuing to look for people to provide loving homes for children in care, particularly for older children and teenagers.

According to the latest figures, there are 900 children in care in the Bradford district and 433 of them are ten or over.
