Dean Windass is set to hit 40 as a City player.

The veteran striker has been offered a year's extension to his current contract, which runs until the end of next season.

That would take Windass, now 37, past his 40th birthday but chairman Julian Rhodes believes there is no danger of him slowing down for a while to come.

Rhodes said: "Dean is still doing the business and he's not showing any sign of age catching up with him. We've got no problem with him playing for us at the age of 40.

"We've given him the offer to extend his contract and it should be sorted out soon - though I think we should wait until he gets his 200th goal first!"

City have also inserted a clause saying that any interested clubs must offer at least £500,000 before they can approach the player. Rhodes turned down Wigan's £350,000 bid in August.

Windass has hit seven goals already this season and is confident he can keep on going.

He said: "There are a few minor details to be finalised with the deal but it's not a problem and I should sign in the next day or two.

"As I said when Wigan first came in for me, the club have looked after me. All I want to do is play as long as I can before hopefully going into coaching and management.

"I feel fit, I feel strong and I want to play for a few more years yet. This will mean I've got another two and a half years and who's to say that I might not sign another contract after this one?

"That's what I'll be looking to do because I enjoy football that much. You're a long time retired and I have no intention of giving up for a while yet."

Windass, one goal short of 200 in his career, added: "There will be a few more goals to come yet and hopefully one on Saturday against Huddersfield."
