A missing Skipton man has been killed by a train in the North East.
Police have confirmed Matthew John Thornton, 45, of Petyt Grove, was struck by a Metro train earlier this month in the Gateshead area.
He had been reported missing from his home on January 22 but had not been seen for over a week prior to his reported disappearance.
His death triggered extensive media coverage to help police identify him.
Now, officers in Gateshead have confirmed the body of a man struck by a Metro train on Friday, January 13 is that of Mr Thornton.
Chief Inspector Mark Warcup, of Gateshead Area Command, said: "Our thoughts are very much with Mr Thornton's family at this very difficult time. We offer our sincere condolences to them and his friends."
It is believed there was no third party involvement and a report has been prepared for the coroner.
