A Bradford school has been recognised as one of the top schools in the country because of its close work with the surrounding community.
Dixons Allerton Academy is to receive £2,500 to help keep developing the IT skills of local elderly citizens after it was named as a BT Internet Ranged School of the Year.
The annual award scheme recognises the UK’s most dedicated young internet teachers who are helping to bridge the digital divide between generations in their local communities.
It was set up following research, which found nearly a third of parents and grandparents were taught how to get online by people aged under 16. The scheme forms part of BT’s wider Get IT Together programme, which aims to instil confidence and empowering people to get online.
Students at the school in Allerton, Bradford, have been working together since last year on the ‘Gadget Gurus’ project, designed and run by the pupils, to help older people learn how to use technology and the internet.
