Tickets for David Hockney’s blockbuster exhibition at London’s Royal Academy are still available, contrary to a rumour that the show was sold out.

Some 2,000 guests attended the opening night prior to the first public showing of A Bigger Picture, since when ticket sales “have been strong”, according to a Royal Academy spokesman.

All 12 rooms of the RA are filled with Hockney’s landscapes of East Yorkshire and Arizona’s Grand Canyon, as well as some early painting of Bradford including a 1997 painting of Salts Mill.

“We advise to book in advance if possible, otherwise tickets are available to purchase on the day at the Royal Academy of Arts,” the spokesman added.

Hockney, who celebrates his 75th birthday on July 9, is believed to be in Germany, recovering from the demands on him over recent months as he put the finishing touches to the show in his huge warehouse studio in Bridlington.

Admission to the show is £14 for an adult. The Royal Academy is open from 10am to 6pm and to 10pm on Fridays. A Bigger Picture runs until April 9.
