A 61-year-old Bradford man has been jailed after he admitted a string of indecent assaults on a vulnerable teenager.

David Betts, of Lister Avenue, East Bowling, was told by a judge at Bradford Crown Court yesterday that he posed a “high risk” of harm to post-pubescent girls.

Betts had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to five charges which related to his relationship with the girl over a year more than a decade ago when she was 15.

The court heard the offences came to light in 2010 when the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told her mother what had happened.

During the time of the offences the teenager performed sex acts on Betts on a regular basis in return for rewards, the court heard, which included cigarettes, money and alcohol.

The relationship between Betts and the girl continued until she was 21, the court was told.

The more she performed for his sexual gratification, Judge Jacqueline Davies said, the more she would get paid.

When she was older, a sum of up to £700 was offered for sexual favours, the judge said. When Betts was arrested, the judge said, he suggested to police in interview that his victim had been promiscuous and said he thought he would “jump on the band wagon”.

In the interview, the court heard, Betts said he found the girl attractive and liked younger girls, who were aged 14 to 15.

Judge Davies ordered Betts to serve a three-and-a-half year extended prison sentence and told him he must sign the sex offenders register for an indefinite period. He was made subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, also for an indefinite period.

She told him the offences were serious ones, committed against a vulnerable victim, and said: “You pose a high risk of harm to post-pubescent females.”
