A plea has gone out to Bradford’s sporting stars to share their memories for a landmark event being created to mark this year’s Olympics.

Sarah Cartin, from Bradford’s People’s Centre, has joined forces with local organisations to decide how to mark the event, and she has now announced it will take place from July 7 to 13.

The groups, including Culture Fusion, Age UK Bradford and District, Bradford District Senior Power, Bradford’s Older People's Alliance and Kala Sangam, are all on-board to help make the week-long celebrations a success.

The organisers met this week to plan what to do. Performances and activities will be held in Centenary Square, where a tennis event will be set up on Sunday, July 8 to mark the men’s final at Wimbledon.

Miss Cartin said: “The aim of the whole thing is to get everyone involved. We are looking to encourage older people in activities and get families and all ages involved.

“There could be a day for athletics, a day for cycling and a day of other activities. A healthy ageing day, where there will be stalls offering advice for older people, will also be there. We also want to hold an exhibition showcasing Bradford’s sporting legacy with Fabric, an arts organisation, in an undisclosed location.”

The next Olympic meeting is on Wednesday, February 8.

“We do have a plea and would love to hear from people who have got sporting memories of Bradford, and there may be some photographs or videos they want to share. They can call 01274 395144,” Miss Cartin said.

“We also want to hear from people who want to get involved in volunteering at the event.

“This is a really good opportunity to link younger people and older people and break down stereotypes to work together on something quite positive,” she added.
