A controversial scheme to put a village library on top of a convenience store was yesterday rejected.
The Co-op had proposed to take over the current library building in Grange Road, Burley-in-Wharfedale, on a lease from Bradford Council and put a new store on top, to replace their current shop in Station Road. More than 250 people had signed a petition against the idea, while there were more than 40 letters of objection to Bradford Council.
The Co-op wanted to make the move from its current store, which it claims is too cramped and not fit for purpose. But Shipley area planning panel turned down the scheme by four votes to two, in line with planning officers recommendations.
Councillors said they had highways concerns, including access for delivery vehicles.
Coun John Cole, said: “I can see the problems with the existing store and the application does have a number of merits for it. However, I do feel the highways arguments are overriding. Whilst it is a good concept, it’s got to be in the right area.”
But Coun Keith Dredge said: “I find this quite an exciting proposition. It has the potential to be a great asset for the community.”
