A son has made his first appearance in Court charged with murdering his 91-year-old father at the home they shared in Bingley Road, Saltaire.

Robert Anthony Cordingley, 56, appeared at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court yesterday accused of killing Bradford motoring stalwart George Cordingley, on Sunday.

Wearing a navy blue tracksuit top, matching trousers and with grey-blond hair, Robert Cordingley spoke calmly, telling the court his full name, age and address.

He was led up from the cells and flanked by two security guards in the dock.

Mr Cordingley was remanded in custody by magistrates until a preliminary hearing at Bradford Crown Court today.

Anthony Caroll, chairman of the bench for the magistrates court, told Mr Cordingley he would appear before a judge at 10am.

He told Mr Cordingley: “You are being sent to the crown court sitting at Bradford for the offence of murder.”

The accused entered no pleas during the two-minute hearing and his solicitor Mr Chivers made no application for bail on behalf of his client.

Widower George Cordingley was well-known for running Saltaire Garage in Bingley Road for about 20 years from the mid 1960s.

He had also been involved in motorbike scrambling in the 1940s and 50s across the Bradford district and was a national expert on German-built NSU Ro80 cars.

Friends from the Bradford motoring scene remembered him fondly following his death, which was discovered at about 10.45am on Sunday.

Ken Chappell, 84, who was a member of Bradford and District Motor Club with Mr Cordingley, its former treasurer, called him a “good friend”.

Police are continuing investigations into Mr Cordingley’s death. Anyone with information should call Homicide and Major Enquiry unit on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
