The testing of all the technology contained within Bradford’s flagship City Park will be completed by the end of the month, Council bosses have confirmed.

But some minor works, such as the installation of bollards and some paving and work on footpaths, will stretch into next month.

Barrier fencing was removed from around the perimeter of the site just before Christmas, allowing visitors to make use of the mirror pool for the first time.

But since then temporary fencing has popped up in parts of the city centre site as construction of the pavilion building continued and some tests of laser artwork took place.

Now the Council has confirmed that some minor construction will continue into February. A formal opening will take place once all work is completed and an official celebration event is being organised for Saturday, March 24.

A Council spokesman said: “The commissioning and testing is due to be completed by the end of January, with some minor works lasting into February.”

Work began on the key six-acre site just over two years ago.

Channing Way was closed in July 2010 to allow the scheme to go ahead and associated work on roads linked to the City Park was finished in October 2011. The last of the 277,000 granite setts were also laid in October shortly after the installation of reed-like lighting columns.

The central fountain was unveiled in November and the testing of the other fountains and lights followed.

More than 60 semi-mature trees, bushes and grassed areas have been planted around City Park which is capable of hosting events.

During 2012 it will be used as a focal point for national celebrations, including the Olympic Games, as well as local events such as the Lord Mayor’s Parade and St George’s Day festivities.

City Park contains a 4,000 sq metre mirror pool and 100 fountains, a central fountain capable of reaching heights of 30m, and 40 low-powered fountains for children to enjoy.

The original budget for the scheme was £24.5 million, although the final cost is not expected to be revealed until completion of the contract.
