The birthdays of two of the district’s oldest residents are being celebrated this week.
Daisy Rayner, one of the most senior citizens in the country, was celebrating her 109th birthday today and a party was held yesterday for the 106th birthday of Shipley resident Sarah Brooks.
Mrs Rayner, of Ilkley, played golf when she was younger, which she said she believes has contributed to her long life.
She was married to William for nearly 35 years and has a daughter, Judy, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs Brooks’ nephew Robert Lister, 82, said she moved from Addingham to Saltaire in her younger years and worked at Salts Mill.
She has received several telegrams from the Queen for both birthdays and wedding anniversaries after she was married to Clifford, who also worked at the mill, for more than 70 years.
