An international investigation into allegations of online sexual abuse of children has been launched, following a tip off from West Yorkshire Police.
A probe was started after the force contacted the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) about a suspect who had targeted a young West Yorkshire girl online. Inquiries established that a number of victims had described performing sexual acts online.
A number of UK police forces are now involved in the investigation and CEOP is working with law enforcement agencies worldwide.
An individual from Kuwait has been arrested in connection with the suspected sexual abuse of children.
It is alleged that online accounts of children and young people were hacked into, and they were then forced to perform sexual acts on webcams. The abuse is alleged to have taken place since 2008.
Youngsters who think they may have been targeted are now being urged to call a specially set up NSPCC helpline – 0800 614 458.
A spokesman for CEOP said: “This all came from a call from West Yorkshire Police. Since then, the inquiry has become national and international.
“If you think you, or a friend, has been a victim of these crimes, or wish to discuss any related concerns, call the NSPCC helpline number. Your call will be answered by a fully briefed NSPCC officer who will be able to offer you advice and support.”
