Household spending in Yorkshire remains the third lowest in the country, with people in the region spending the least on clothes and shoes, new figures show.
The region’s average weekly household expenditure for 2008 to 2010 totalled £405.50, more than £170 lower than London, the mostly costly area, the research by the Office for National Statistics found.
The biggest slice of spending for households in Yorkshire (£61) went on ‘other expenditure items’, which includes mortgage repayments, council tax, fines and money given to children.
An average of £19.10 was found to be spent on clothing and footwear each week in Yorkshire – the lowest amount in the country – with spending on communication (£10.60) and health (£4) also less than in all other regions.
Recreation and culture was the second highest spending area in Yorkshire at £55.60, followed by transport at £52.90 and housing, including fuel and power, at £48.80.
Household spending in the region was again found to be higher than that in Wales and the north east with total average spending almost £5 more a week than between 2007 and 2009.
