Young sporting talent, serving soldiers and fundraisers who have gone the extra mile for charity are among dozens of people in the district waiting to hear whether they will have the honour of carrying the Olympic flame.
Nominations have flooded in for people of all ages from across the district, who are among 28,000 potential torchbearers hoping to represent the region during next year’s Olympic torch procession.
People have been nominating torchbearers directly to the London 2012 Organising Committee or through sponsors Samsung, Coca Cola and Lloyds TSB.
The bank has set up an interactive map on its website where people can view a selection of potential torchbearers from their area.
Next month, conditional offers will be made to 8,000 people and the chosen torchbearers will be officially announced in the New Year.
Bradford, Keighley, Ilkley, Skipton and Brighouse were announced earlier in the month as host locations to welcome the flame on Sunday, June 24, as part of the London 2012 Olympic torch relay.
Gary Verity is chief executive of tourism organisation Welcome to Yorkshire and chairman of the Yorkshire Gold team, set up to seize opportunities for the region in the run-up to the games.
He said: “We are delighted that the Olympic Torch will be with us for six days – which is just one day less than it spends in London.
“It will give us a wonderful opportunity to showcase the county to a worldwide audience and for local communities like those in Bradford to get involved in the celebrations.
“I am hopeful that when the successful torchbearers are announced in 2012 that they will be from every corner of Yorkshire, representing the very best of our county.”
Bradford received another Olympics-related boost when Springwood Primary School, Manningham, became the first school in Yorkshire to be named Olympic School of the Month.
It was recognised for its commitment to the seven Olympic and Paralympic values – respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality
