Calls to overhaul Bradford Council’s school admissions procedure to make it better at detecting fraud will be discussed by councillors next week.

Members of the Children’s Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee will examine a report on the school allocation and appeals process, produced in response to a petition calling for proof of address to be provided by parents when they submit school application forms.

The petition, containing more than 860 signatures, was handed to the Council last month by Julie Brown, of Shipley, who unsuccessfully applied for a place for her four-year-old son Lewis at three primary schools in Thackley and Idle.

It asks the Council to make it compulsory for all parents to provide a council tax bill and one other proof of address to help reduce the number of fraudulent applications.

However, the report states as there is no requirement in the School Admissions Code or in local authority regulations for parents to prove residence, the Council cannot make such a move compulsory.
