A calendar and greeting cards showcasing the work of talented art students at Bradford’s Marie Curie Hospice has gone on sale.

The calendar has the theme of Bradford and the work of ten day therapy patients has been put together showing some of the district’s natural and architectural heritage, including City Hall, Bradford Wool Exchange and the media museum.

Art as therapy is an important part of daily activity at the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford.

The hospice’s art tutor Steve Davis runs three classes a week and this year he has successfully organised art exhibitions by his hospice students at Bradford’s Industrial Museum, as well as putting together the calendar.

He said: “I enable patients to explore levels of emotions and creativity through art, introducing newcomers with a stage-by-stage demonstration and easing them into it rather than presenting them with a blank page and a brush.

“It’s important to understand who the patient is as well as their physical needs, because symptoms and treatment can affect memory, vision and motor skills.

“I tailor equipment and support for each individual and get to know the patients. Seeing the work they produce is amazing.”

Everyone who buys the calendar and cards will be helping Marie Curie to raise the £3.3 million annual running costs of the hospice in Maudsley Street, Bradford.

The calendar also highlights key fundraising challenges and activities throughout the year, which people can get involved in.

The calendar and cards have been printed free of charge by Bradford company Spellman and Walker, as part of their ongoing support for Marie Curie.

The calendar is on sale at the hospice and at the Industrial Museum.

Mr Davis added: “We are looking for other venues to sell them. Contact the fundraising team at the Marie Curie hospice to make arrangements.”

If you can help call (01274) 337000. The calendar costs £5.
