by Kathryn Bradley T&A Reporter Spot checks have been introduced at a care home after separate allegations of inappropriate behaviour by staff.

Bosses at Currergate Nursing Home, in Skipton Road, Steeton, near Keighley, say they have taken “quick and effective action” after two staff were dismissed earlier this month for posting an inappropriate picture of a resident online, as reported last week in the Telegraph & Argus.

Two elderly residents were also removed from the home in recent weeks after their family became concerned about their care.

Now Gill Sangster, operations manager for The Czajka Care Group, which owns the home, said more is being done to make sure safeguarding policies are being adhered to by staff.

She said: “Since the incident, we are doing more spot checks on staff to ensure policies and procedures are being adhered to.

“We already had policies in place for the use of mobile phones and the internet, which is covered during the four days’ mandatory training. We have lockers for all staff to lock away mobile phones and valuables while they are working. That has been raised with staff again at a meeting.”

An investigation was launched earlier this month amid allegations that staff had behaved inappropriately in a resident’s room while the resident was present.

The probe found a care worker danced in the resident’s room while a colleague recorded the image, which was uploaded to Facebook. Both care workers were dismissed for gross misconduct.

Ms Sangster said a meeting had been held with residents and their families last week to explain what had happened. She said: “People were extremely supportive, praised the care and thanked us for being open and honest about it. They commended the way we dealt with it quickly and effectively.

“We have kept the resident involved and their family informed from the moment the incident occurred and they are satisfied with how we have handled it.”

Pamela Ward, registered manager at the nursing home, said: “The incident has been very upsetting for the staff but it has brought us closer together and made the team even stronger.”

David Wilkinson, whose mum has been a resident of the home for more than two years, said: “The nursing home dealt with the situation extremely well. I am very satisfied with the care they provide for my mum.”
