Two men have been jailed for a total of nine years after they were convicted of intentionally wounding a prostitute's partner by beating him with a dog chain in Bradford city centre.

Aaroon Yaqoob, 21, and Mohammed Hussain, 23, attacked the man who was in Bradford to protect his girlfriend in the early hours of December 12 last year, Bradford Crown Court had heard.

During the trial the prosecution had alleged the 23-year-old prostitute was raped outside Ruby House, Dyson Street, in Bradford city centre, after she had consensual sex with Yaqoob.

The 21-year-old defendant was cleared of one allegation of rape but the jury of nine men and three women could not agree, after more than seven hours of deliberation, on a second charge of rape, and was discharged.

Hussain was found not guilty of aiding and abetting the alleged rapes.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC had told the pair when they were convicted he could not sentence them until he knew whether a retrial would be sought on the second rape charge faced by Yaqoob.

The prosecution yesterday offered no evidence on the outstanding charge and the pair were sentenced, Yaqoob, of Ring Road, West Park, Leeds, to five years, and Hussain, of Hessle Mount, Hyde Park, Leeds, to four years for wounding her partner with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.

The woman’s partner was attacked with a dog chain, the court had heard, and suffered three head wounds and bruising.

During the trial the court was told by prosecutor Sophie Drake Yaqoob had demanded his money back after he and the prostitute had consensual sex in a fire escape.

Judge Durham Hall had locked the pair up after they were found guilty on November 11, telling them they had been convicted of an offence for which a custodial sentence was inevitable.
