A mugger who robbed a partially-sighted woman being led by a guide dog in Bradford city centre has been condemned by police and a charity.
The attacker escaped with the woman’s handbag, containing only a soft drink and some medication, after he struck in Sunbridge Road.
The 39-year-old woman was pushed and threatened before the robber grabbed the bag from her shoulder. Police said she was left shocked but unharmed.
Officers were yesterday examining CCTV footage of the area in a bid to trace the suspect, and have also appealed to a group of people who were nearby at the time of the attack – 2.15pm on Tuesday – to come forward.
Detective Inspector Mark Long, of Bradford South CID, said: “This was a despicable and clearly targeted act.
“This ordeal has understandably left her frightened and shocked.”
Roy Ruddick, Royal National Institute of Blind People campaigns officer for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “If someone is specifically targeted because they’re blind or partially-sighted that is obviously appalling.
“When you lose your sight it can be extremely traumatic and often people can lose confidence so feeling safe in public places is vitally important in ensuring people with sight loss remain independent.”
The suspect was white, about 6ft, of medium build, wearing a blue top with the hood up, and blue jeans.
Det Insp Long said: “We also know there was a group of people close by at the time. I would like to hear from these people or anyone else who was in the area.”
The attack was on the day that the Telegraph & Argus reported how poppy-sellers were spat at, sworn at and harassed.
Anyone with information about the mugging should call police on the 101 non-emergency number, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555111.
