Police have been called to Bradford Royal Infirmary following the death of a baby boy – believed to have drowned in a bath at his Bradford home.
Doctors called in officers after the 13-month-old infant was pronounced dead early yesterday.
The tragedy occurred at a terraced house in Annison Street, Barkerend.
An officer maintained guard outside a house yesterday but police said they were not treating the death as suspicious.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said last night: “Police were called in the early hours of this morning by staff at Bradford Royal Infirmary to reports of a sudden death of a 13-month-old boy.
“At this stage the incident is not being treated as suspicious. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
A spokesman for Bradford Coroner’s Office confirmed it was involved in the investigation of the death of the baby.
A post-mortem examination has been ordered to establish the exact cause of death and an inquest will be held in due course.
Councillor Zameer Shah (Con, Bowling and Barkerend) described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and paid sympathy to the baby’s family.
He said: “This is the first I have heard of this awful news. It’s a terrible tragedy for any life to be lost suddenly but even more painful for it to be such a young one. My thoughts go to the child’s family.”
Annison Street was quiet yesterday, with minimal traffic and only a few people on the street.
The residential area is close to Leeds Road and there is a bed shop on a nearby corner.
An employee at Triple X Autospares, which overlooks the house, said: “No-one really seems to know what’s happenend but police have been there all day.
“I haven’t seen another soul come or go from the house at all. The family have a bedroom that overlooks our yard and they keep a look out for us if there’s ever any bother with anyone breaking in, and they ring the police.
“I haven’t seen any young children at the house before, just lads in their 20s. It’s a mystery what’s happened.”
