Two care home workers have been sacked after allegations they posted “humiliating” pictures of a resident online.
The workers were dismissed hours after the Telegraph & Argus revealed an inquiry was under way at Currergate Nursing Home, in Skipton Road, Steeton, near Keighley, amid allegations that staff had posted an inappropriate image on social networking site Facebook.
Now bosses at the home have confirmed two workers, who have not been named, have been sacked following a full investigation.
Gill Sangster, operations manager for The Czajka Care Group, which owns the site, apologised to families affected by the ordeal and stressed it was an “isolated” incident.
She said: “An isolated incident occurred at Currergate Nursing Home in which two staff behaved inappropriately in a resident’s room while the resident was present.
“The incident consisted of one staff member dancing in the room while the other staff member recorded this image on a mobile phone. The staff member then posted the image on a social networking site. This has now been removed.
“As soon as we discovered this incident the staff members were suspended and a full investigation commenced.
“We informed Bradford Council Safeguarding Team and the Care Quality Commission immediately. I can confirm that as a result of the investigation, both staff have been dismissed.
“Our residents’ safety and well being is our highest priority and we will not tolerate such behaviour from staff. We have apologised to the resident and their family who were affected by this incident.
“We would also like to extend our apologies to all of our residents and their families for any anxiety or distress caused by the reporting of this incident.”
The incident came to light last Monday and following investigations the workers were dismissed on Friday.
The area’s MP and ward councillors called for lessons to be learned in the wake of the incident.
Keighley and Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins said: “What happened is clearly a gross breach of the trust given to those charged with caring for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
“I welcome the strong action by Currergate Nursing Home and look forward to receiving assurances that lessons have been learned.”
Ward councillor Adrian Naylor (Con, Craven) said: “I believe people who go in to care homes are entitled to the best care that is possible and that includes looking after their dignity whilst they are in there.
“What I will be looking for is the most thorough investigation possible to ensure we get to the bottom of this and any lessons that need to be learned are applied across the whole of Bradford district.”
His colleague Councillor Andrew Mallinson (Con, Craven) said: “My sympathy goes out to the person affected by the allegations and to their family.
“I think the Council needs to take action to follow up allegations rather than appearing to sit back and observe what is happening.
“People need to be reassured that if a relative is going to the home, they are being looked after in a dignified way.”
Fellow ward councillor Michael Kelly (Con, Craven) added: “I am terribly disappointed to hear something like this has happened in my ward. It really is deplorable.”
