Crowds gathered at Bradford Cenotaph to observe a two-minute silence marking Armistice Day today.

The tribute started at 11am, the time the guns on the Western Front fell silent at the end of the First World War on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Veterans, members of the public and civic dignitaries stood with their heads bowed in silent remembrance as the City Hall clock chimed on the hour and prayers were said for the war dead, serving soldiers and their families.

The Reverend Canon Sam Corley, Canon Precentor at Bradford Cathedral paid tribute to the ultimate sacrifice given by service personnel.

Canon Corley said: "We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives have been given and taken away in two world wars and in past conflicts and for those who have died recently in Iraq and Afghanistan and commend them to the mercy of God."
