by Jo Winrow City Hall Reporter A total of 54 names have so far been collated to be included on a new war memorial to be installed in Bradford city centre.
It will honour those soldiers from the district who have died since 1945 and will be placed in the garden behind the cenotaph, next to the Alhambra Theatre.
Bradford Council has been working with the Royal British Legion on names for inclusion, as well as on the format and design of the memorial.
The Council’s executive will meet tomorrow prior to the service of remembrance being held at the cenotaph at 11am to mark Armistice Day. Members will be asked to approve £40,000 of funding for the memorial.
Council special projects officer Danny Smith said they had collected 54 names of service personnel in Bradford who died in active service since the Second world war.
He added that they were considering a simple design using the joint service crest – incorporating the eagle of the Royal Air Force, an anchor from the Navy and crossed swords from the Army. In addition, the memorial would include Bradford’s crest.
The decision by the Council came after the family of Sergeant Peter Rayner, of Odsal, who was killed while on patrol in Afghanistan a year ago, called for an extra memorial to remem-ber those who had paid the ultimate sacrifice.
