A 24-year-old man has gone on trial accused of cornering and attacking a teenager who was stabbed and allegedly beaten over the head with a baseball bat on a Bradford street.

Shakil Miah, of Burnsall Road, Barkerend, Bradford, denies causing the boy grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawful wounding and having a baseball bat and a knife as offensive weapons.

The jury at Bradford Crown Court was told yesterday by prosecutor Martin Sharpe that a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named because of his age, has admitted the stabbing.

Mr Sharpe said the victim, who was 15 at the time and whose identity is also protected by a court order, was attacked on Amberley Street, Bradford Moor, at about 4.30pm on March 31.

It is alleged Miah and the 14-year-old boy chased and cornered the teenager after he got the better of the younger boy in a fight earlier that day.

Mr Sharpe told the jury it was alleged that Miah got out of a silver Vauxhall Vectra and he and the 14-year-old chased after him. He was cornered outside a butcher’s shop and Miah repeatedly struck him over the head with the bat, knocking him down.

Miah is said to have hit the boy, who has learning difficulties, about five times before his young accomplice stabbed him three times in the torso causing very serious injury.

Mr Sharpe said the victim suffered a significant head wound from the bat, needing stitches. Two of the stab wounds were skin deep but the third went through a vital organ causing significant blood loss.

“This was a very serious injury and could have been life-threatening,” Mr Sharpe said.

The boy needed surgery to drain off a litre and a half of blood from his abdomen and spent eight days in hospital.

The court heard that Miah was arrested an hour later and told the police he played no part in the attack.

Mr Sharpe said that the victim and a witness to the assault picked him out as having taken part.

The trial continues.
