A 29-year-old man who dealt his partner’s former boyfriend “a fearful beating” with a crowbar and a chopping board has been jailed for eight years and nine months.

Stephen Milburn had drunk up to nine pints of beer and taken cocaine when he took the law into his own hands and attacked Karl West in his home at 3am, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Milburn, of Tyersal Road, Tyersal, Bradford, was angry after Mr West threatened Victoria Evans in breach of non-molestation and restraining orders.

He was found by the police hiding in his attic after the assault at Mr West’s home in Ash Grove, Eccleshill, on April 17 this year.

Prosecutor Duncan Ritchie told the court yesterday, Milburn’s clothes were spattered with blood and a fragment of bone was embedded in his boot.

Mr West, 30, a father-of-two, spent ten days in Leeds General Infirmary after the beating. He needed surgical reconstruction on his face and suffered anxiety and memory loss.

Mr Ritchie said Milburn was wanted on a warrant from Bristol Magistrates’ Court at the time for a violent incident on January 22, after travelling from Bradford with two other men to find a man they accused of cheating them in a cannabis deal.

Milburn pleaded guilty to causing Mr West grievous bodily harm with intent and to the affray in Bristol.

The court was told he received a six-month prison sentence in 2006 for a wounding in West Bowling, Bradford, in which a man was punched in the face and fell, banging his head on the pavement.

Milburn’s solicitor advocate, Alistair Bateman, said there was “a very emotive background” to the attack on Mr West.

Mr West had breached a restraining order to protect Miss Evans five times.

He was jailed for eight years for attacking Mr West and an extra nine months for affray.
