The boss of a prominent city centre hotel says he is “surprised and disappointed” he has been unable to fill two apprenticeship vacancies, in the face of rising youth unemployment.
General manager at the Midland Hotel Gary Peacock has been seeking two apprentices, one to work with the kitchen team and another to learn reception skills in the front office – but has been frustrated by a lack of suitable applicants despite widespread publicity in June.
Mr Peacock is now working with Bradford College to see if they can help find suitable candidates.
“I am offering two apprentices a chance to learn the skills they need to begin a career in the hotel business,” he said.
“A busy hotel like the Midland never closes, so staff often work evenings or weekends. But if you don’t mind hard work and want to learn what good customer service is all about, then you can have a rewarding career in hotels.”
Front office manager Joanne Miller, of Wibsey, began working weekend shifts at the hotel while attending Buttershaw High School.
She said: “Working in a busy hotel gives you such a buzz. It’s hard work and the hours can be long, but it’s so worth it.
“I would encourage any young person with energy and enthusiasm to consider a career in hospitality.”
