Knitted hats, scarves and gloves will be making their way to homeless people on Bradford’s streets this winter following a clothing appeal.
Saltaire Yarns, based in Oastler Road, is hoping to collect hundreds of home knitted or shop-bought items of clothing to give to Bradford Nightstop.
Owner Elizabeth Akester decided to start the collection after husband David heard about the work done by the charity at a meeting of Bradford Rotary Club.
The shopkeeper is now urging more people to donate to the cause. She said: “We want shop-bought and home-made hats, scarves and gloves.
“It doesn’t take much time to knit them and they are not very expensive to buy, but if we have a winter like last winter, it could be horrendous on the streets for a homeless person.”
Nightstop has provided a bed for the night for more than 5,000 young homeless people since it was set up in 1993.
Bill McCann, an education worker with Bradford Nightstop, said: “It is always nice to offer people scarves, hats and gloves in the winter, but we don’t always have them to offer. That is why it is brilliant that they are doing this.”
