A 47-year-old man has appeared in Court, charged with attempted murder, following an incident in an alleyway in Bradford.

Father-of-three John Sealy, of Parkfield Road, Manningham, faced Bradford magistrates yesterday, in connection with an incident off Priestman Street, Manningham, last Friday.

Police had been called, just after 5pm, to the report of a 30-year-old local man being injured at the back of a cafe after an argument with another man.

Well-built Sealy faces a charge of attempting to murder Saeed Ali Emier.

Mr Emier has undergone surgery to remove half of his lung and remains ill in hospital.

Police said yesterday he was in a stable condition.

Balding Sealy, who was dressed in a grey sweatshirt and dark casual trousers, was flanked by two security officers in the secure dock at Bradford Magistrates’ Court.

He spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth, but sat with head bowed and dabbed his eyes with a tissue during the 25-minute hearing.

Prosecutor Marina Hunter-Gray said the matter could only be dealt with at the crown court. She applied for the defendant to be remanded in custody.

Solicitor Upkar Bahia, representing unemployed Sealy, who was born in Barbados, applied for bail on his behalf.

Mr Bahia said the defendant had been injured himself. He said Sealy had a fixed and stable address and close ties to Bradford.

Chairman of the Bench, Peter Holmes, sitting with two other magistrates, sent the case for trial to Bradford Crown Court.

The Bench remanded Sealy in custody. He will next appear on November 10 at Bradford Crown Court for a preliminary hearing.

The scene of the incident was cordoned off by blue and white police tape last weekend.

Police sealed off a small section of Carlisle Road, outside a cafe and a hairdressers, and a 50 yard area of adjoining Priestman Street, including a taxi firm and the alleyway. Two police officers guarded either end of the cordon.
