A well-loved Bradford primary school head teacher has died after a battle with cancer, aged 54.
Stewart Duxbury, who worked at Bradford Moor Community Primary School, was described by the chairman of the board of governors, Razwana Mahmood, as an “absolutely wonderful, fantastic person”.
“He had such an impact on the school during his six years there he was nominated last year for an OBE by parents, staff and governors,” she said.
Mrs Mahmood said during his 16 month fight against the disease, he made efforts to explain his treatment to the pupils, helping them to understand his illness.
“It was all explained to them and it made it easier for them to deal with,” she said.
Mr Duxbury had a total of 34 years’ teaching experience, and was head teacher at Southmere Primary School, Great Horton, before moving to Bradford Moor.
Mrs Mahmood said he was respected in the local area.
“When he became head teacher here, he went out into the community and knocked on all the doors and introduced himself so they would know who he was,” she said.
She said the school was looking at ways to honour his memory, including the introduction of a school cup that would be awarded annually in his name.
