A stunning and emotional production of the moving opera Madama Butterfly is promised from award-winning producer Ellen Kent, who is on a mission to bring opera to the people.
Featuring the internationally-acclaimed Ukrainian National Opera of Kharkiv, the show is Puccini’s take on the heartbreaking story of a beautiful Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant.
The production, which boasts sumptuous sets and beautiful costumes, has taken 18 months to bring to the stage.
“When the curtains open, I want people to say ‘wow!’” says Ellen. “I want to do opera that people actually want to see. I think this is my best Madama Butterfly ever. It’s a very real performance that I think people will identify with and feel moved by.
“My operas have to be emotional and beautiful. Mine isn’t minimalist – it’s traditional opera with a sexy feel.”
The 70-strong company includes Ruslan Zinevych, who has sung with Pavarotti and performed Ellen’s operas at the Royal Albert Hall. Music is provided by the Kharkiv Theatre Orchestra.
Madama Butterfly is at St George’s Hall on Friday, November 11. For tickets, ring (01274) 432000.
