Students at a girls school looked to great women of the past to mark their school’s 125th anniversary.
As part of a week of celebrations at Skipton Girls’ High School, many girls turned up at school on the day 125 years ago that the school was opened dressed as aviator Amy Johnson, writer Charlotte Bronte and chemist Marie Curie – all three with houses named after them at the school.
The girls also played traditional games, including hopscotch and, during lunchtime, enjoyed an open air party with jelly and ice-cream.
In 1896, the school originally opened in The Temperance Hall, Sackville Street, now the Plaza Cinema.
Headmistress at the time, Miss Felicia Larner, was given the task of building a brand new school at Butler Field, the current site of the school in Gargrave Road.
