Brontemania is buzzing this week, with new film adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, and the opening of a new play about the literary sisters by Skipton-born writer Blake Morrison.
Yesterday, a new big-screen adaptation of Wuthering Heights was unveiled at the Venice Film Festival, and on Friday, the latest film version of Jane Eyre goes on national release.
Friday also sees the opening of Morrison’s play, We Are Three Sisters, linking the Brontes’ story to Chekhov’s Three Sisters.
The new Wuthering Heights movie, by Bafta-winning director Andrea Arnold, was filmed around North Yorkshire and stars Leeds actor James Howson as the first black actor to play Heathcliff in a film of Emily Bronte’s classic novel.
In the book, she describes her anti-hero as “dark-skinned”.
The new Jane Eyre film, starring Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender and Dame Judi Dench, was largely shot in Derbyshire. Last week a preview screening took place in Haworth, attended by director Cary Fukunaga.
