During the May bank holiday weekend, the UNESCO World Heritage village of Saltaire is hosting the fifth Saltaire Arts Trail. Residents of the village’s Grade II-listed houses will be opening their kitchens, living rooms, hallways and bedrooms to become unique gallery spaces displaying some of the finest arts and crafts from across the region. The Maker’s Fair is a unique shopping experience, with more than 40 quality designers and makers selling hand-made items. There’s also plenty to keep little hands busy, with activities ranging from felt-making to den-building. They’ve even got what is possibly the world’s smallest cinema!
This May half-term, until June 5, the National Media Museum in Bradford is giving everyone the chance to enjoy popular children’s shows from the 1950s to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, an event that marked a new era for the country in May 1951. The Yorkshire County Show is on Sunday, June 5, at the Nidderdale Showground in Pateley Bride. This show, say the organisers, offers something a little bit different. Diverse, informative, education, entertaining, friendly and fun are just some of the words to describe what is rapidly becoming a well-respected fixture on the show calendar. There will be main ring attractions and sideshows galore, including professional lawnmower racing, dedicated food, craft and trade stands, animal attractions, flower-arranging, cookery, arts and crafts and creative writing and photography. The show is open from 11am onwards. Entry is £4 (under-tens go free), with ample free parking.
Calling all train buffs. Visitors to the National Railway Museum in York have the chance to catch the first glimpse of the iconic steam locomotive Flying Scotsman ahead of the final phase of its restoration during the May bank holiday weekend. After then, it will be worked on behind the scenes by the museum’s workshop team to ensure it is ready for upcoming steam tests and commissioning runs in June. To celebrate, the museum is hosting nine days, from today to June 5, of Flying Scotsman-themed fun including bagpipe performances, craft activities, a discovery trail, daily talks and video footage.
