An allotment holder has called on vandals to stop targeting a site in Bradford after damage was caused for the second time in a week.

David Bottomley, treasurer of Queens Road B Allotment Association, said he was devastated after being told rocks had been thrown through his greenhouse at the site in Bolton, Bradford.

Six days earlier, members of the association found hundreds of plants had been sprayed with weedkiller when they opened for a plant sale.

The sale went ahead but the wilted plants had to be given away.

Mr Bottomley said plot holders were keeping a log of incidents at the site, which had been targeted by thieves and vandals dozens of times over the past year.

He said: “I was devastated. It’s a hobby, something I love doing and it’s all in ruins. It’s very sad somebody could be so mindless.

“I don’t know what more the police can do other than keep an eye on things. We’ve had enough now.”

Councillor Howard Middleton (Lib Dem, Bolton and Undercliffe) expressed his sympathy and concern with the situation.

He said: “It’s a real shame because people put a huge amount of work in down there.

“It’s just mindless vandalism. This is the time of year when people should be reaping the rewards of their hard work after the long, hard winter.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that officers were investigating the incident.

The spokesman said: “Police were called at 8.21am on Friday to reports of an incident at allotments at Queens Road in Bradford. The glass of a greenhouse had been smashed and damage caused to the plants inside. Officers are making enquiries.”
