Police were last night hunting two men suspected of holding up a Saltaire bookmakers with a hand-gun.
The men, who had their faces covered, entered the Betfred shop in Bingley Road shortly after 6.30pm yesterday and demanded cash but made off empty-handed, a police spokesman said.
Officers were last night examining the interior of the shop as police tape cordoned off its entrance.
People working in the area last night spoke of their shock and fear that such a serious incident had been reported on a busy, main road in broad daylight.
Nohman Pervez, owner of the Indian Spice takeaway opposite Betfred, said he had been working in the kitchen at the back of the shop during the incident, but he was concerned about what he had heard.
“The police told us there had been a robbery,” he said. “The police van came and blocked the road. We saw the police go into the building.
“It is scary that someone could have come in daylight, trying to rob a shop, on a main road. Lots of people will have been around.”
