Rescue work costing up to £200,000 is under way to save a heritage building at the protected Ilkley Lido.
Owner Bradford Council is preparing to unveil a newly-restored pavilion in the grounds of the popular outdoor pool, and is waiving fees for all its attractions at the Denton Road pool complex on the opening day this Saturday.
The Council is opening the 1930s-built Lido for the summer season, which runs until September 4. Repairs to prevent the grade II listed timber pavilion by the pool from collapsing are well under way and the Council says the current work should be completed by Saturday.
Executive member for regeneration and economy, Councillor David Green, said: “We have a planned programme of repairs for the pool and lido at Ilkley and the phase to repair the pavilion has now started on site. The work is being carried out to the grade II listed building by the Council’s facilities management team.
“The work has been planned for some time and will cost up to £200,000. The programme is to carry out extensive repairs to prevent the timber building from collapse. The current work being carried out is to replace individual timber wall panels of the pavilion.
“The completed building will look as it does now and the work is due to be completed in time for the opening of the lido on May 28."
