The number of Bradford councillors should be slashed by two-thirds if the district has an elected mayor, an MP has suggested.
Shipley MP Philip Davies said it was ridiculous to have an elected mayor taking decisions but still have 90 councillors.
Under Government plans, Bradford Council leader Councillor Ian Greenwood will become “shadow mayor” under the Localism Bill until a referendum is held.
Mr Davies said the number of councillors should be reduced to 30. He said: “It seems to me there would be no need for 90 councillors if we have an elected mayor which would take decisions. Especially given the American senate only has 100."
Coun Greenwood said: “There is a dialogue to be had about the number of councillors but I think 30 would be virtually impossible unless they were full-time serving their constituents.”
