Wiz Khalifa – Rolling Papers (Atlantic) *

If there was one song that could sum up how horrendous and soul-destroying music (if I dare describe it as such) can possibly be, Black And Yellow can rightly claim the title. A tedious backing permeated continuously with the ridiculous choice of three words. Such mediocrity is present throughout the rest of the album and, although one might hope there would be at least one passably decent track, unfortunately this is not the case. On the whole, a sub-standard album that is clearly inferior to other rap/hip hop offerings that have graced the charts lately.

Seasick Steve – You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks (Play It Again Sam) **

As a gentle introduction to American blues music, it could be instructive to sample Seasick Steve. This album stands up to scrutiny in the white blues field, and on the heavier guitar tracks, he sounds like a watered-down version of ZZ Top. But, as far as the blues goes, there is no substitute for the real thing – and the blues connoisseurs should look no further than the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker or Howlin’ Wolf for their fill.
